A family of five narrowly escaped a fire which destroyed their home on early Friday morning, Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue reported.

The fire department, with assistance from Cowlitz County Fire District 1, responded to the 2400 block of Northwest Hayes Road at 1:21 am on Aug. 26. Children in the home were awoken by a growing fire in the living room and alerted the rest of the family, according to the department. CCFR stated the family barely made it out of the home safely.

A total of 17 personnel responded to the fire, and by the time firefighters arrived the home was “fully involved” with the blaze. The home is estimated to be a total loss.

The family had been burning candles following a power outage in the area, the department stated. The outage occurred because of a vehicle collision earlier that night.

The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the family, the department stated. The fire is under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office.
