It’s been nearly two years since heavy snowfall caused the roof of Hampton Lanes in Northampton to collapse. Numerous issues delayed progress but after it all, the sparkling new Hampton rejoined the bowling community.
Bowlers always remember the first 300 or 800 at a center, and there was a long list of competitors eager to return and make their mark.
It didn’t take long before an unlikely name christened the lanes with 300 in the most improbable set of circumstances.
Jonathan Everett and the Friday Night Our League returned to Hampton from their temporary home at Rose Bowl. It was the circuit’s fun night and the league was bowling under no-tap rules, where a nine-count is as good as a strike.
The 27-year-old decided not to take advantage of the handicapped format and threw a dozen natural strikes for his first career 300.
“It was an incredible feeling,” said the Whitehall resident and firefighter for Hokendauqua. “It was a lot off my back, but I wondered if it would count because of it being no-tap that night. So, it was a great feeling when I was told it was good.”
Indeed, the 300 did count because the event was one of the league’s regularly schedule nights.
Everett couldn’t have imagined 300 was in the cards as he opened in the new digs with 177-209-206. He said the lanes hooked more than they did at Rose Bowl and that suits his game better.
The final game saw the righty fire off the front seven, which matched his previous best start. Once he garnered the eighth strike, it was time to let it all go.
“It was time to air it out. After the ninth, one my legs was like Jell-O,” he recalled. “I just told myself to keep it slow, focus and do what I had done on the other shots. The 10th one was good but the 11th was my only close call.”
His ball nestled a pinch high in the 1-3 pocket and a stubborn 7-pin took its good, old time before toppling.
“I was thinking that this is how it was going to end? After that it was a matter of not screwing it up,” Everett said. “I knew everyone was watching, and I wound up throwing it perfectly. I just didn’t want to leave one pin standing.”
Everett credits his assistant fire chief, Mark Bilder, for getting him in the league. Bilder was bowling with him on his record-setting night.
Everett also had high praise for the hard work that was put into the bowling center. He said it’s a whole different experience, and he’s happy to be back.
Prior to the 300, Everett’s high single was 268. His high set is 701. He’s averaging 194 but will forever be known as the first bowler to shoot 300 at the new and improved Hampton Lanes.
Henderson on fire
Jenna Henderson got the ball rolling early and often to begin the second half of the season. All she did was card her second perfect game of the season during a big 763 set at Oakwood, and used games of 289 and 279 at Steel City en route to a 771 set.
MaryEllen Alcalde posted the only other women’s 700 with her 711 at Jordan Lanes in Allentown.
Six other bowlers dumped a dozen. John Raychel used his trey at Blue Valley to tally a 771 effort. Bob Patti Sr. sandwiched games of 279 and 221 around 300 at Skylanes for an even 800. Earl Bowl in Earlington saw Dave Landis and Dustin Brandis roll perfection. Brian Duke recorded 300 at Oakwood.
Matt Walsh lumped together his second perfect game in a couple of weeks at Steel City on his way to 793. That sum led his Gebhardt’s team to a 3,721 in the Gary Piripavel Memorial League.
Joe Fiume topped the series list for the week thanks to his 805 at Skylanes, followed by Scott Keeler’s 802 at Earl Bowl in Earlington. Larry Fricker Jr. nudged past the 800 mark at Steel City with an 801 on games of 297-215-289.
Boys break through
Five Junior boys eclipsed the 700 mark last week led by Matt Comerro. The reigning Bowler of the Year ripped Steel City to the tune of 238-232-279–749. Owen Fink joined Comerro at Steel City with 246-701.
David Markowitz and Chase Leckner feasted on Blue Valley during their stop in the Lehigh Valley Junior Traveling League. Markowitz used a 265 single toward a 716. Leckner left the Wind Gap center with 703.
Landon Stout pinned the first 700 of the season on Bel-Pike. He registered a big 724 on games of 279-222-223.
