Everett Monitoring Saturday Morning Tsunami Alert

Dredging continued uninterrupted this morning at the 10th Street Boat Dock in Everett Harbor.

You may have received a notification on your cell phone from the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management with the following information about a tsunami advisory issued on the US West Coast:

Here’s Snohomish County Emergency Management with an emergency message. The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for the Snohomish County coast. Waves and strong currents could reach the county coast later in the morning but are still uncertain. The effects can last for several hours. Be sure. Avoid Puget Sound beaches, waterfront.

In addition, the Everett Fire Department posted the following information on social media around 9:30 a.m. this morning:

A tsunami warning has been issued due to a massive volcanic eruption on the island of Tonga (general territory of Australia). A tsunami has been generated that has moved across the Pacific and has already hit Hawaii and Alaska with strong currents/waves of one to two feet. In the picture below you can see some early reports for different areas in Alaska.
On site we monitor information. Depending on your location, you may have received a telephone notification of the consultation. There are NO evacuation notices in effect. Wave heights and strong currents of 1-3 are forecast but are still uncertain. Everett could see a “steep rise” in water around 10:30 a.m. We do not expect any serious impact.

⚠️ Stay out of the water and away from the shore. Get away from the beach and away from ports and marinas. Keep in mind that the first wave may not be the largest and may arrive much later than the first.
The tsunami warning lasts until three hours after the last wave that is a foot or higher.

There’s probably no concern for Everett, Washington, and around 11:00 a.m. Saturday, the Washington Department of Emergency Management released the following:

To be clear, the tsunami advisory applies ONLY to the outer shore and Strait of Juan de Fuca, NOT the inner shore districts of Puget Sound.

MyEverettNews.com will continue to monitor the social media channels used by Everett, Washington emergency officials and will share any important information here.

Another great suggestion from the Everett Fire Department:

With all this talk about tsunamis this morning, it underscores the need to speak informed. A good way to stay informed during an emergency is to sign up for emergency notifications with the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management.
