Everett Is Building – Help Tell The Story

A note from Leland Dart, publisher MyEverettNews.com.
Starting in July and running through the end of the year MyEverettNews.com is partnering with the City of Everett Office of Economic Development to present a series of articles based on the theme “Everett Is Building”. Certainly the City of Everett, Washington is facing many challenges from affordable housing to concerns over crime, helping the unhoused and finding funds for city programs. That’s not something we’re going to ignore, but with this series I’d like to explore what’s being done by the City of Everett (and those who live and work here) to advance the quality of life in Everett, Washington.

Every Saturday I do a series, “Meet the Owner” where we highlight a different business. Some new, some established. One thing I’ve found in talking with various business owners, they have a passion for Everett. People continue to come to Everett and open businesses, raise families and build community. The Pandemic has knocked us all for a two-year loop and the current inflation picture is creating a challenge for most if not all of us but yet, Everett is building. Here are some recent examples.

Yusupha Bojang, a US Veteran opened Dizayus African Market in February on Everett Mall Way.

Seagen is building a state of the art cancer care biomanufacturing and research facility at the site of a former Sand and Gravel plant.

With townhomes to the north and single family homes to the south, the Riverfront Development is now building 300 apartments and mixed-use buildings along the Snohomish River.

Alaska Airlines is back on a schedule of more than a dozen flights a day out of Paine Field.

Two new apartment buildings are leasing at Waterfront Place, Hotel Indigo is booking summer events and new restaurants are under construction at the Port of Everett.

Adair Gearhart opened Catalyst Cafe to create a sober, family-friendly community safe space for local LGBTQ+ folx, QTBIPOC, and allies.

Naval Station Everett will serve as the homeport for 12 Constellation-class Frigates. The first is expected to arrive in 2026 with additional improvements to the base to accommodate crew members.

Record crowds and the largest-ever number of vendors came to this year’s Sorticulture Garden Arts Festival in downtown Everett earlier this month.

Kaiser Permanente’s expanded facility will include primary and specialty care, surgical services, an ambulatory surgery center, 24/7 urgent care, imaging, lab, and pharmacy services — with a goal of opening for patient care in late 2024.

So let’s talk opportunity, culture, housing, jobs, transportation, events, a creative district, access, a green economy and whatever else you see that fits the theme of “Everett is Building”. Send me to email at [email protected]. If you’d rather, give me a call at (425) 280-7620. I’d like your input and ideas as I work to develop this series of stories, your stories on how city government and residents are working together to show, “Everett is Building”.
