Every coach wants to see continuous growth from their team as the season progresses.
On Thursday, Everett and Bedford played one another after playing the night before. Everett was looking for another victory, while Bedford was desperately searching for their first win of the year.
Bedford hung right with Everett until the Lady Warriors pulled away in the final minute for a 49-38 victory.
Six of the 7 players to play for Everett scored in the win with many of those points being spread out. Cloe Price paced the team with 23 points, while freshman Jade Colledge added 10.
“They played us some junk defense and I thought we grew up a little bit tonight,” said Everett coach Keith Moyer. “It was nice to see the younger kids be able to make an in-game adjustment. We haven’t spent as much time as I would have liked working on that. We have a lot of time to prepare and we will be more prepared for it the next time we’re on the floor.
Everett jumped out to a 12-6 lead after the first period.
Price, Colledge, Kylee Harman, and Sara Shaffer all scored for the visitors to push ahead to an 8-0 lead with 4 minutes left in the quarter, but the Lady Bisons cut the deficit down to 2 points with 2 minutes left.
Taylor Koontz started out the Lady Bisons’ run with a putback, while Katie McDevitt scored twice before Price added two buckets as the Lady Warriors held a 12-6 lead.
McDevitt scored on a layup as the second quarter began before Price added four more points.
The Lady Bisons posted a 4-point run with Koontz and Ashlyn Pemberton scoring as the Lady Bisons were only down by 4, 16-12.
The teams went back and forth with Bedford’s Kasey Shuke hitting a 3-pointer to make it a one possession game, but the Lady Warriors pushed ahead with the help of a Shaffer 3-pointer to hold a 22-17 lead at the half.
After a 2-1 run by Everett at the start of the second half, the Lady Warriors got their lead up to 10 points with Colledge and Price scoring on layups. After an exchange of points kept it a 10-point deficit, Bedford’s Shuke and McDevitt hit back-to-back 3’s to whittle the deficit down to 4 points, 30-26.
Everett’s Addison Wood was fouled twice, and the Lady Warrior went 4 for 4 from the line to help Everett to a 34-26 lead.
Bedford continued to score, and with the help of a 5-1 run, the Lady Bisons were down by 5 with 5:33 remaining in the game.
Everett rallied each time Bedford made it a 4-point deficit, and with 3 minutes left to play, the Lady Warriors finished out the game with a 9-2 run to secure the 49-38 victory.
Price and Shaffer scored a combined 4 points before Koontz scored the final points for Bedford. Harman and Price went a combined 3 for 4 from the foul line, while Price added another bucket to secure the victory.
“I thought Olivia (Hillegas) did a great job on the boards in the second half,” Moyer noted. “It gave us some easy scoring opportunities.”
“I thought this was the best we’ve played all year,” said Bedford coach Blaine Shuke. “We’re showing signs of improvement. Hopefully we’ll keep it up.”
Seven of the 8 Lady Bisons to see playing time scored with McDevitt leading the way with 11 points. Koontz added 8.
