DVIDS – News – U.S. Coast Guard recognizes NMRTU Everett collective, individual effort

Together and individually, Everett staff members of the Naval Medical Readiness Training Unit (NMRTU) were recently recognized by the US Coast Guard.

The U.S. Coast Guard Commander presented NMRTU Everett with the Coast Guard Merit Team Merit Award for their efforts as part of the 2021 Medical Mobilization Team.

In addition, Chief Hospital Corpsman Steven D. Dreher and Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Chad S. Singer each received letters of recommendation for their contributions to medical mobilization efforts.

The team was responsible for supporting the mobilization of Coast Guard Port Security Unit (PSU) 313 in connection with Operation Enduring Freedom from February 1 to April 15, 2021.

NMRTU Everett has partnered with the Coast Guard Medical Division 313 to provide timely and required medical screening appointments for over 120 members on duty. In just the first five days of mobilization, the team completed 203 vaccinations, 82 medical tests, 104 audiograms, 52 dental exams, 112 regular health assessments, 122 pre-deployment health assessments, and 20 referral appointments.

They worked diligently to ensure that the members were medically ready for the mission. Dreher and Singer’s letters of recommendation noted that they were consistently performing exemplary duties by coordinating the clinic’s efforts to medical mobilize 120 Coast Guard members. In preparation for this event, they collected the necessary information and demographic data, which resulted in all members being registered in the clinic’s electronic patient record system – MHS GENESIS. In addition, (they) were vital in the preparatory phase with guidance and expertise as they served as a liaison to multiple medical departments and were critical to the success of the unit’s medical readiness by ordering diagnostic tests and reviewing the results. ‘

Dreher and Singer also worked closely with providers to identify health conditions that needed timely follow-up and prescribed precise medications so that approximately 110 Coast Guard members were fully medically qualified for the deployment. Her performance also ensured that over 50 Coast Guard members from additional, distant units who needed additional qualifications were also treated appropriately, logistically allowing the unit to spend valuable time training rather than traveling.

PSU 313 is a deployable commando of six transportable safety boats – modified 25-foot fiberglass hulls known as piranha (s) – that are designed to meet all of the requirements for maintaining port security and operational readiness support around the world as well as performing of security measures can respond if necessary for home ports.
