Cortez Memorial Service To Impact Roads In Everett Tuesday

On Tuesday there will be a memorial service for Tulalip Police Officer Charlie Joe Cortez, who died on November 17 last year while on duty at sea. The service is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Angel of the Winds Arena on 2000 Hewitt Avenue in downtown Everett, Washington. The service is open to the public, the doors open at 12 noon and a mask is required.

The memorial service and procession will affect several streets in Everett, both near the arena and between Tulalip and Everett. Here are some details about road closures and parking effects.

  • Head south on I-5 from 172nd St to Hwy 529 exit – taxi slower – between 10:50 am and 11:20 am.
  • No southbound traffic on I-5 heading south on the ramps between 172nd Street and 4th Street 10:50 AM and 11:20 AM.
  • Expect a slowdown on 529 south of Marysville to Marine View Drive between 11:00 AM and 11:20 AM.
  • Marine View Drive, heading west and south, slows down to Hewitt Avenue between 11:00 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.
  • Between Marine View Drive and Colby, expect a slowdown on Hewitt Avenue towards the east at 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM.
  • Hewitt is closed between Colby and Broadway from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
  • No parking on Hewitt between Colby and Broadway 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • No parking on Wall Street between Broadway and Rockefeller from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • No parking at Oakes or Rockefeller between Wall and Hewitt from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • A fleet of honor with lights will be set up near the boat launch on 10th Street to honor the procession and the loss of Officer Cortez at sea. This is north of the start and the best view can be from Legion Park. Please watch out for officers on motorcycles and foot control ramps and crossings throughout the procession. The best views from the processions are expected to be along Marine View Drive. Visitors along the street are asked to be there by 11:00 a.m.

    Access to Everett Naval Station and Everett Harbor will be restricted during the procession. People are reminded not to park next to the Burlington Northern Rail Line on the east side of Marine View Drive.
