CDC extends federal eviction moratorium – Everett Post

(WASHINGTON) – When the spread of the coronavirus forced businesses to shut down temporarily and permanently last year, many Americans with no job security also faced possible evictions from their homes. Now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have decided to extend the federal moratorium on eviction of tenants who are unable to make rent payments.

Politicians at the state and federal level initially called for an eviction moratorium, as the tenants had to contend with the pressure on unemployment. However, this measure expired on Wednesday March 31st. On Monday, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky an extension until June 30th.

The CDC said in a statement Monday that the COVID-19 pandemic is “a historic threat to the country’s public health” and that keeping people inside their homes and out of overcrowded living situations – such as the homeless shelters – a key is by Avoiding evictions will be part of containing the virus.
