Seahawks fans will get their first look at the changes the team is making for the 2022 season when they meet the Steelers in Pittsburgh to open preseason play at 4 p.m. Saturday. One of those changes is something that has Michael Bumpus very excited about the defense’s direction.

Salk: The Seahawks’ most welcome breakout candidates

In his latest Seahawks breakdown video, the former NFL wide receiver and current co-host of Bump and Stacy shares what he’s been seeing during training camp from strong safety Jamal Adams, and he details why it’s a good sign for what will be a pivotal season in team history following the departures of leaders Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner.

Adams was a big-time acquisition by the Seahawks prior to the 2020 season, costing Seattle a huge haul that was headlined by a pair of first-round NFL Draft picks. The Hawks doubled down on the investment, too, signing Adams to a four-year, $70 million extension before last season that made him the NFL’s highest-paid safety at the time.

The results for the 26-year-old Adams with Seattle have been mixed, however. Though he set an NFL record for most sacks by a defensive back in a single season in 2020, he made zero sacks last year. Pass coverage has never been his calling card, so without him making an impact in the pass rush, his 2021 season was seen as a bit of a disappointment. Additionally, injuries have shortened each of his two seasons thus far with the Seahawks, and his hard-hitting style has resulted in him needing multiple offseason surgeries.
