RENTON, Washington – Jamal Adams not only reset the security market with his four-year $ 70 million extension from the Seattle Seahawks.

He blew it out of the water in at least one metric.

Adams’ annual average of $ 17.5 million slightly exceeded the average of $ 15.25 million a year – the previous standard on the position – and $ 35 million in guarantees Justin Simmons received earlier this off-season Denver Broncos graduated. According to Over The Cap data, Landon Collins still has the highest total guarantee at $ 44.5 million, but that’s partly because he signed a six-year extension with the Washington Football team.

Adams’ deal can get even richer with an additional $ 2 million in incentives and escalators.

A source said that ESPN Adams’ base salary for 2024 will increase by $ 250,000 for each season over the next three years that he makes the Pro Bowl and the Seahawks the NFC championship game. The maximum value of this escalator is $ 750,000 in 2024 with an additional $ 1 million available in 2025. Adams can also earn a one-time incentive bonus of $ 250,000 for completing any of the 2021-2024 seasons with at least five sacks and at least three interceptions.

Here is the full breakdown of Adams’ expansion:

2021

Base salary: $ 1 million (guaranteed)

Cap number: $ 5 million

Comment: For cap purposes, Adams’ $ 20 million signing bonus will be prorated over the term of its renewal, adding up to $ 4 million for each of the next five seasons. That $ 4 million plus his base salary of $ 1 million is a cap of $ 5 million for 2021, which is about half of what was planned for the last year of his rookie deal. According to Over The Cap, the Seahawks have a cap space of around 13 million US dollars. That’s more than enough for in-season expenses like injuries replacements, the training roster, and maybe a trade takeover. The Seahawks adhered to their policy of not fully guaranteeing the money beyond the first year of the contract, so the remaining $ 17 million of Adams’ $ 38 million warranties are only guaranteed for breaches upon signing. Investments are made in full guarantees (i.e., injuries, skills, and caps) at later dates.

2022

Base salary: $ 2 million

Option bonus: $ 12.44 million

Cap number: $ 9.11 million

Comment: An option bonus essentially serves as a second signing bonus. Adams will receive the $ 12.44 million cash if the option is exercised next spring (assuming part of the payment is not deferred), and the Seahawks can spread the cap over the remaining four seasons of his deal, 3 each . $ 11 million. That plus his $ 2 million base salary and $ 4 million prorated signing bonus adds up to a cap of $ 9.11 million in 2022. If that $ 12.44 million were part of Adams’ base salary instead , he would add $ 18.44 million to the cap, the option bonus makes that number a lot more manageable while the money still stays on the front end of Adams’ deal, which the players prefer.

Base salary: $ 11 million

Cap number: $ 18.11 million

Comment: At this point the deal really starts counting against the cap. Perhaps no coincidence, linebacker Bobby Wagner’s massive contract is also slated to come out of the Seahawks’ books (though they could always renew it). Assuming the NFL’s salary cap resumes its annual increases at this point, it would also help Seattle absorb the meat of the Adams cap as well.

2024

Base salary: $ 16.5 million

Cap number: $ 23.61 million

Comment: You now have the bookkeeping down: $ 16.5 million plus $ 4 million plus $ 3.11 million is $ 23.61 million. At least for now. Keep in mind that Adams’ base salary could increase by up to $ 750,000 for 2024 depending on how many of his Pro Bowl / NFC title game escalators he hits over the next three seasons.

2025

Base salary: $ 17.5 million

Cap number: $ 24.61 million

Comment: The Pro Bowl / NFC title game escalation could make Adams an additional $ 1 million in 2025, though he would obviously hope to get another overtime before seeing the final year of this year. He will be 30 years old in October 2025. There are no per-game roster bonuses, something the Seahawks often end up with at the end of larger contracts. These give the teams financial relief in the event that a player is injured, since, depending on the type of bonus, he does not receive it if he is inactive or on an injured reserve. Players and agents therefore prefer that the money be in the base salary instead, as it would also be earned in the event of an injury.
