Artye Scott Obituary (1933 – 2022) – Spokane, WA

Surrounded by love from above and below, our Mother, Artye Lee Scott went home to Jesus on June 28, 2022. We can only imagine the complete joy in Heaven when she was reunited with her “Sweetie” and our Dad, Jim Scott along with her parents, siblings, family and friends. As humans, we seldom express gratitude for someone. She made sure you knew that she cared about you. We feel blessed to be her children and want to express our gratitude to her for everything she was to all of us.
She was born in Cassville, Missouri as Artye Lee Smith to Alfred and Inez Smith and named after her Mother’s sweet sister who passed at an early age. Her siblings, except for brother Tim (Penny) have been waiting- Sister, Barbara Gibford (Ron), Brothers Ronnie Smith (Beverly) and Marvin Smith. Her family made their way to the Northwest where she walked with us for 88 years. She met the love of her life in a high school art class where he was surrounded by a “gaggle of girls” and she “caught his eye”. All because two people fell in love – they had 5 children together; Shirley, Brad, Carrie (Phil), Kris (Larry) and Kathy (Cameron). All of that love led to 14 Grandchildren, 36 Great Grandchildren and 4 Great Great Grandchildren and counting. They had celebrated 70 years of marriage.
Having a family was a dream and she was an exceptional Wife, Mother and Grandmother. Her compassionate nature led her to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (“Low Paid Nurse” – she would joke) as well a surgical Tech. She worked at Deaconess and Spokane’s Veteran’s Hospitals where many benefited from her care. She had a volunteer’s heart and gave generously of her love and time throughout her life. Her adventurous spirit had her moving to Ghana, Africa in support of our Dad’s career. Even there, she volunteered at a local hospital and made many new and lasting friendships.
Mom was a talented artist in everything from painting to sewing and making memories with her scrapbooking and photo albums. She was a creative writer with stories published in “Reminisce” and “Nostalgia” magazines among others. We enjoyed camping growing up as both of our parents loved the outdoors. Cooking, hosting and planning family holidays and reunions gave her special joy. She created fun traditions like a goofy Christmas gift exchange and delighted in having her grandkids over to decorate cookies, turning a blind eye to all the batter eating. Any kind of indoor and several outdoor games were her favorite ways to spend time at family gatherings and reconnect.
She was a breast cancer survivor and a woman of Faith who was unafraid to fly away home. Even as we miss you, a piece of you remains within and we will see you again.
If you feel inclined to give, please donate to Hospice House North or Breast Cancer Research in lieu of flowers.
We are planning a Celebration of Life for both of our parents as we were unable to honor them in a way that would include our large group of family and friends. Stay tuned and think of Mom when you hear a baby laugh or see a hummingbird’s wing.
